Volvo S40

Volvo S40 Overview Overview: Although shorter bumper to bumper than the previous version, the new Volvo S40 has a more spacious interior thanks to a 3-in.-longer wheelbase and 2.5-in.-wider stance. Built on a Ford worldwide corporate platform thats 68 percent more rigid than its predecessors, the S40 shares bits with other, larger Volvos, including the new inline five-cylinder DOHC engine. The base 2.4i comes with a 168-hp 2.4-liter engine that produces 70 lb.-ft. of torque. The T5 gets a 218-hp 2.5-liter turbo that produces 236 lb.-ft. A five-speed manual is base equipment on both models and a six-speed manual and awd will be offered for the T5. New safety features include additional crossmembers, a larger side-impact airbag on the passenger side, and seatbelt pretensioners for both the front and rear seats. Options include a DVD navigation system, stability and traction control, power sunroof, bi-xenon headlights and dual booster cushions for the rear seats. Drivers Notebook: The controls are streamlined and the console gives the cabin a modern look, with more keypad controls than buttons. The 60/40-split rear seats fold flat for additional storage space. Due to the low trunklid, you cant stand a large suitcase upright in the trunk. Bottom Line: The Volvo S40 is meant to appeal to buyers younger than those who traditionally have been attracted to Volvos. To that end, the new S40 has more aggressive styling with a shorter, V-shaped hood, more rounded corners and reduced overhangs compared to the car it replaces.
